Fire Pits We Love

Sweater and s’more season is right around the corner. The smell of apple crisp and pumpkin spice will be wafting through the air before sitting down to watch some football. And people will be eager to sit around a campfire on a crisp, cool evening. And these days, there is no need to go on a camping trip to enjoy that feeling. Fire pits offer a great campfire experience in the comfort of your own backyard.

If you are considering buying a backyard fire pit, the four most common types from which to choose ae; wood burning, gel fuel, propane, and natural gas. They each come in what seems to be an unending variety.

Wood Burning Fire Pits

The wood burning fire pits create the same warmth and smoky vibe as a campfire. Typically, they are made of steel bowls with legs to keep it safely off the ground. This style is typically the easiest to set up as they can be placed just about anywhere, and it converts the backyard atmosphere into a perfect place for family and friends. It’s also the best way to do a little s’more making!

Gel Burning Fire Pits

Gel fire pits are also versatile as they can be easily placed in different parts of the backyard. But they have what many consider a distinct advantage as they will not create as much smoke or burnt wood smell as the wood burning ones. That’s a great feature for those who are more sensitive to that smell. Gel fuels are easily refilled and are ignited by simply lighting the fuel with a gas grill lighter. The flame will simply go out once the fuel is consumed.

Propane Fire Pits

Propane fire pits provide some of the most convenient. There’s no need to messing with wood or refilling gels. These are typically larger, and you see a lot of these created that look like tables and they might be surrounded by glass or rock pebbles. Lighting is super easy, like a propane grill. Want to stop the fire? Just cut off the gas! It may not have the classic campfire feel, but these make it simple to enjoy on a regular basis.

Natural Gas Fire Pits

Lastly, a natural gas fire pit can be a fun option if you are able to make a permanent connection to the natural gas line. It is definitely less flexible as the fire pit will be set in one place, but in the end, they are easy to maintain and cost less than regular propane and gel fire pit options.

Do It Yourself

Of course, many people choose to build their own fire pits instead of buying one. A simple one can be built in weekend. To build a fire pit, you will need the following items:

  • Shovel

  • Level

  • Retaining wall blocks

  • Metal fire pit ring

  • 7” square concrete pavers to line the bottom of the pit

  • Gravel to fill in the spaces

  • All-purpose sand

Then, follow these steps:

Once you have your fire pit area all set up, make sure you get the most use out of it. Don’t just warm yourself by the fire. Try a few different recipes like the ones below to add to the fun.
